Bernard Parker’s second minute goal was not enough for Kaizer Chiefs, who suffered a 2-1 defeat to Township Rollers at Jamali Stadium in Tlokweng, just outside of the Botswana capital of Gaborone.

The Glamour Boys are in the process of fine tuning ahead of the new season, which is preceded by a Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates in seven days time.

Three of the club’s new recruits were on show first up, with Kearyn Baccus, Lazarous Kambole and Samir Nurkovič all getting starts.

They started out well on Saturday, with the former Bafana striker, Parker who found the net soon after kick off, assisted by Nurkovič.

However, Ernst Middendorp’s men could not build on the early lead as the hosts soon controlled matters.

The Botswana giants were rewarded close to the half-hour mark when Kaone van der Westhuizen capitalised from a defensive lapse to put one past Bruce Bvuma from close range.

There was a further scare for Amakhosi before the break, as Segolame Boy got close to making it two for Township Rollers, but neither side could edge ahead inside the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Middendorp brought made use of his bench, bringing on Leonardo Castro and Lorenzo Gordinho – both linked with a move away – alongside Willard Katsande, Siphelele Ntshangase and Dumisani Zuma.

However, the quartet were unable to give the Glamour Boys a decisive advantage as it remained 1-1 for much of the second half.

That was until Tumisang Orebanye delivered the telling blow with 22 minutes remaining on the clock, making it 2-1 to Township Rollers.

That was how things would remain as the hosts walked off victorious.

Chiefs now return home, where they will be facing Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup on Saturday, 27 July.

They begin their Premier Soccer League campaign with a visit to Thembisa for a clash against Highlands Park on Sunday, 4 August.
