Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly ready to break the bank to secure the services of Bafana Bafana star midfielder Bongani Zungu.

With a squad overhaul expected at Naturena ahead of next season, a number of players have been linked with Amakhosi, and Zungu’s name is now being bandied about.

According to a source known to Daily Sun, Chiefs have made the first move by asking to meet Zungu.

The purpose of the said meeting, according to the same publication, is to present Zungu with an offer.

Furthermore, it is being reported that Chiefs are willing to pull all the stops to meet Zungu’s demands to ensure that he returns to the PSL to don the black and gold jersey.

“The club has asked Zungu for a meeting to make an official offer. They really want to make him their first big signing in the coming transfer window, and are willing to meet his demands,” said the source.

Zungu was previously on the books of Mamelodi Sundowns when he left South Africa for Europe six years ago.

The 28-year-old was recently playing for Scottish giants Rangers FC, but Steven Gerrard-coached team has indicated that Zungu’s stay will not be extended.

He was only at Rangers on a season-long loan deal, and with that deal having expired, Zungu will have to return to parent club Amiens SC in France.

And what this means is that Chiefs will have to dig deep into their pockets to land Zungu’s signature unless Amiens may willingly decide to let the midfielder go.

Zungu still has a year left on his contract with Amiens, who are now campaigning in Ligue 2 following their relegation from Ligue 1 in two seasons ago.

Nonetheless, Zungu’s salary package is still expected to be high given the number of years he has spent in Europe.

This said move by Chiefs is similar to the one they pulled in 2012 when they convinced the likes of Tsepo Masilela, Siyabonga Nkosi and Siboniso Gaxa to return home from abroad.

In addition, Stuart Baxter, who is expected to be named the new Chiefs coach in next few days, is a big fan of Zungu.
