Kaizer Chiefs keen on standout Bafana star, put off by European interest?

Holding out for a better offer?

Kaizer Chiefs target and Bafana Bafana Afcon mainstay Sphephelo Sithole has bigger fish to fry, according to reports.

Sithole wanted in Europe and Mzansi

In a February edition of iDiski Times, it was reported that Chiefs were keeping a close eye on developments at Afcon. In particular, Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole jumped out at the base of Hugo Broos’ midfield. He’s currently on the books of Portuguese second-tier side Tondela, who sounds resigned to losing the man nicknamed ‘Yaya’. Sithole has been in Portugal since 2017 when he started his journey with Sporting in Lisbon. The 25-year-old midfield general has a long-term contract with Tondela but if they can attract offers from top-tier sides, it may be too tempting to turn forthcoming offers down.

The classy, sometimes combative midfielder has featured 15 times in the league this term, weighing in with two goals and two assists from the base of the engine room. Not afraid of a tackle, Yaya has also picked up seven bookings this term for Tondela.

Now, according to there has been no contact from the club to his agent as he mulls over a few European offers.

“No one talked with me (at Chiefs) about that situation, only European clubs. I work for my client, you know, for Yaya. If some offer comes, I will go to my client and explain what the type of the contract or proposal is and after that we will discuss our way or next move. But until now, Kaizer Chiefs have not told me anything. No one from South Africa (clubs) has called me. Only European clubs” said Sithole’s agent Manuel Tomas.

Since promotion to the top tier as recently as 2021/22, Sekhukhune has become an established DStv Premiership team. They finished 11th in their first-ever campaign and followed it up with a creditable 7th place last season, finishing below Stellenbosch only on goal difference. Babina Noko also got to the Nedbank Cup final last term. After their weekend win over Orlando Pirates, they now occupy third position ahead of the Buccaneers on goal difference and have played a game fewer. Whether they can hold onto star names like Bafana winger Elias Mokwana is another matter. If he does move onto one of Mzansi’s ‘Big Three’ clubs, it’ll be a harsh lesson for Sekhukhune that success often comes at a price and there’s a clear hierarchy in the footballing ecosystem. Seema wasn’t there from the start but his appointment underlines the club’s ambition and prudent vision in spotting managerial market gems.

Should Amakhosi’s managerial shortlist include the impressive Lehlohonolo Seema?
