Chiefs have been rumoured to be eyeing quite a few players from Stellenbosch ahead of the current transfer window, with Antonio van Wyk thought to be the latest.

Chiefs and Stellenbosch have a good relationship

The two clubs are no strangers to doing deals with one another, as Chiefs have signed no less than three key players from Stellenbosch, while the Cape Winelands side benefitted from the good relations through one player thus far. At the beginning of the previous season, Amakhosi signed both Zitha Kwinika and Ashley du Preez in a double deal. Stellies on the other hand were able to sign Kgaogelo Sekgota on a free transfer, despite still having a year left on his contract at Naturena.

Now, Chiefs are thought to be keen to potentially another double deal, involving another key Stellenbosch duo. The first name they were linked to was left back Fawaaz Besadien. They’re believed to be competing with Mamelodi Sundowns for his signature, while his current club have indicated that they’re negotiating with the player for a long-term extension.

Van Wyk next transfer?

Now news doing the rounds is that Chiefs could be set to test the resolve of Stellenbosch by approaching them for the signature of van Wyk. According to The Citizen, they’re monitoring the attacker.

“I remember when the club’s (Stellenbosch) reserves won the Diski Challenge there were teams who inquired after his (van Wyk) services. Now that he has played more games in the senior team people see how good he is. No wonder the likes of Chiefs have been monitoring him. If the club agrees to sell him, then he won’t be coming cheap,” said a source to the same publication.

It now remains to be seen if Chiefs will either try to sign van Wyk in January or the end of season. It is also expected that, either way, Stellenbosch will make it very difficult at the negotiations table.
