SAFA has reportedly not heard a word from Kaizer Chiefs regarding their appeal against the rejected request to have their five December DStv Premiership fixtures postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak at Naturena.

This despite the fact the Soweto giants were quick to indicate they would be appealing the judgement handed down on 20 December.

Amakhosi were hard hit by Covid-19 earlier this month with an initial 31 positive cases – which later skyrocketed to 52 – forcing the club to ask the league to postpone their five scheduled league matches in December.

Before the PSL could make a ruling, Kaizer Chiefs failed to honour two matches – their home clash against Cape Town City FC and an away game at Golden Arrows.

Amakhosi did then play their final three matches against Sekhukhune United (H), Royal AM (A) and Maritzburg United (H).

It took the league three weeks to issue a statement in which it was confirmed that the request had been denied.

The ruling also opened up the very real likelihood that Kaizer Chiefs would have to forfeit the two matches they missed – and the six log points on offer.

Kaizer Chiefs vowed to take the case on appeal to either SAFA or the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC).

However, some 10 days since the ruling, SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe has reportedly told the Soccer Laduma website that Kaizer Chiefs are yet to bring the matter to their attention.

But that’s not to say the Soweto giants are giving up without a fight as the DRC remains a possible option.

The PSL is currently on a lengthy recess thanks to the festive period and the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In their ruling, the PSL indicated that it would be making no further comments until a press conference scheduled for 5 January 2022 at which it would address questions on the Executive Committee’s decision to reject Kaizer Chiefs’ appeal.

Kaizer Chiefs’ chances of success appear slim

Kaizer Chiefs’ chances of a successful appeal appear remote as in a circular sent to all 32 member clubs more than a year ago the PSL made it clear that Covid would not be a valid excuse in postponing matches.

Amakhosi headed into the Christmas break in fourth place in the DStv Premiership standings on 28 points after what is effectively 18 matches although they have only taken to the field 16 times.

They trail runaway log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 16 points, but do have one match in hand.

Kaizer Chiefs are scheduled to next be in league action away to Cape Town City FC on Wednesday, 15 February 2020.
