Kaizer Chiefs‘ interim coach Cavin Johnson has placed urgent pressure on his bosses Kaizer Motaung Jr and Bobby Motaung. A new head coach is needed to bring back the glory days. Some of the names linked with Amakhosi include Pitso Mosimane, Benni McCarthy and Nasreddine Nabi.

The current interim coach, Johnson stepped in last October to replace Molefi Ntseki. The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has only delivered five wins in 14 games. The spell included an embarrassing loss in the Nedbank Cup last 32 against the Motsepe Foundation Championship bottom-half side Milford FC. The pressure rose on the Chiefs coach on Tuesday night after a very lethargic 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch FC in Johannesburg.

The results marked just two wins in 2024, where Chiefs only scored two goals in seven games.

Coach Johnson reacted to the loss to Stellenbosch: “I thought the performance we put on tonight was not even half the performance we put on Saturday,” the Chiefs coach told SuperSport TV, as quoted by iDiskiTimes. “We have to go back, try again, put different players on the pitch and let’s see what happens,” he added “We just didn’t get it right tonight, I’m not happy with the performance of a lot of the players but we have to fix them up, we have to try our best. We have another game against Chippa, we need the points more than any other team in the PSL at this present moment,” the Chiefs interim tactician added.

“We need to box cleverer and we need to play the ball better,” Johnson concluded.

In the meantime, the club remains linked with a total of seven candidates to take over by next season. As far as the reports, former Nigeria, FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon coach Jose Peseiro is a leading favourite to coach Chiefs next term. Recent reports said Amakhosi’s management requested to meet his agent.

Another leading name on the list is Nasreddine Nabi. The Tunisian narrowly came close to joining Amakhosi in June 2023. The two parties failed to agree on negotiations regarding Nabi’s assistants. Chiefs declined to part ways with some of the club’s existing technical team members. Meanwhile, Nabi joined AS FAR in Morocco, where he is leading the log table with four points with six games remaining.

The list of candidates to possibly take over at Chiefs include Pitso Mosimane and Benni McCarthy. Mosimane’s contract with Abha Club ends in June, as the same applies to McCarthy at Manchester United.
