Venezuela claimed a precious point away to Brazil in World Cup qualifying but Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Edson Castillo was nowhere to be seen.

Venezuela claimed a creditable 1-1 draw against giants Brazil in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Edson Castillo, however, wasn’t even named on the substitutes bench.

Arsenal centre-back Gabriel gave the Selecao the lead in the 50th minute thanks to an assist from Neymar. However, Venezuela hit back through substitute Eduard Bello in the 85th minute to give La Vinotinto a previous point on MD3 of qualifying. It leaves Brazil 2nd in the table with seven points after three games, while Venezuela is further down in sixth with four points. It’s also indicative of how tough World Cup qualifying in South America can be.

Castillo absence proves the depth of international football

Edson Castillo has been starring for Kaizer Chiefs in his debut campaign for the Glamour Boys. So much so that he earned himself a call-up to the Venezuela national team, but he wasn’t named among their substitutes in their 1-1 draw against Brazil. Castillo will hope to get a chance when Venezuela face Chile on the 17th.
