Kaizer Chiefs boss concedes title race, focuses on Africa

Kaizer Chiefs boss Arthur Zwane has thrown in the towel as far as the PSL title goes. So, what’s the next focus for the beleaguered boss?

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane will be welcoming a return to the CAF Champions League, if the Glamour Bots can manage it.

CHIEFS: Zwane loves talking about how many goals his Kaizer Chiefs side SHOULD have scored

Zwane seems to have thrown in the towel as far as the league crown is concerned following his team’s 1-0 loss to high-flying Mamelodi Sundowns.

Arthur Zwane has seen his Amakhosi side lose three matches on the bounce, making it the first time in history that the Glamour Boys have lost the first three PSL games in a calendar year. They’re now sixth in the table, some 22 points behind Sundowns, and even though they have a match in hand over the Brazilians, Zwane seems resigned to his side not winning the league.

The Glamour Boys will now aim for second place, which would guarantee them qualification to the prestigious CAF Champions league, a competition they last featured in two years ago, when they went all the way to the final where they lost to Al Ahly.

Chiefs missed out on continental football this term following a fifth place finish in 2021-22. SuperSport United, Richards Bay and Orlando Pirates will all be eyeing out second place though, so it’s far from a formality, especially if you consider Chiefs’ terrible 2023 form. Even in-form Sekhukhune United are in the mix!

“We really want to go and play in the Champions League next season,” said Zwane as quoted by IOL. “I tasted it when I was part of the team as an assistant coach in 2021.

“I want to go back there. That will help our players to grow and know what it’s like to compete at that level, while some of them must help the country.

“And that makes it equally important for us to compete at this level. So, we’ll push for a second spot, if we can’t get anything. And I think that’s realistic.”

Glamour Boys desperately need results now

Chiefs are now four points adrift of Orlando Pirates, and 11th-placed Maritzburg are just four points behind them and have won twice in a row. As we all know, though, things can change quickly in football.

A few sections of fans have called for Zwane’s head, seemingly fed up with the club’s current eight-year trophy drought. Their defeat in the 2021 CAF Cjampions League final also feels like a long time ago. Next up for Amakhosi is a league encounter against Royal AM on January 29th.

It’s a must-win, but we seem to say that all the time with Kaizer Chiefs.
