Both Chiefs and Sundowns were believed to have registered an interested in Stellenbosch FC left back Fawaz Basadien, but there could be a stumbling block.

Basadien has been key for Stellenbsoch

Basadien has had a stellar first half of the season for Stellenbosch, and found himself at the forefront of their Carling Knockout Cup triumph towards the end of last year. That type of form saw him getting rewarded by being named in Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos’ 50 man preliminary squad for the AFCON showpiece in Ivory Coast. Even though the 27-year-old did not make the final cut, he has managed to catch the eye of two South African football giants in Chiefs and Sundowns.

It was reported that both Chiefs and Sundowns had been weighing up a possible transfer for Basadien, either in the current January transfer window, or at the end of the season. This prospect could become even harder to make happen now, after the latest information from SABC Sport. According to the public broadcaster, Stellenbosch have confirmed that the player has extended his deal at the club, until at least the end of the next season.

Stellies look to stave off Chiefs and Pirates interest

“We’re in positive discussions with him (Basadien) to renew on a longer-term, but we do have him secured for another 18 months at this stage,” said Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie to the same publication.

This now means that both Chiefs and Sundowns would likely have to part with top dollar in order to secure the services of Basadien, if Stellenbosch are even willing to sell. Having sold the likes of Olwethu Makhanya, Junior Mendieta, Ibraheem Jabaar and Sibongiseni Mthethwa during the previous window, history has shown that the Cape Winelands side is willing to do business for the right amount.
