Luvuyo Memela opened the scoring at the start of the second half but it was Veli Mothwa who produced a man of the match performance on the day.

Keagan Dolly came to Amakhosi’s rescue as he blasted his late penalty into the back of the net deep into stoppage time.

Both teams had a slow start to the encounter as there were no clear-cut goalscoring inside the opening 10 minutes of the game.

Dolly was the presented with a chance to score but he was brilliantly denied by Mothwa after a great combination play that left the AmaZulu defence open by Chiefs.

Dolly only had the goalkeeper to beat but his attempted curler was parried back into play by the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper after 20 minutes.

Sandile Khumalo got an opportunity to score from inside the Amakhosi box after some poor defending but his shot was saved by Daniel Akpeyi.

Chiefs continued to pile the pressure on Usuthu, and Bernard Parker should have scored as he got behind the AmaZulu defence after 36 minutes.

However, with only Mothwa to beat, the veteran midfielder failed to score as he’s denied from point blank range.

Mothwa then pulled off a third brilliant save as he tipped Khama Billiat’s bullet attempt over the crossbar from outside the box after 41 minutes.

The first half ended with AmaZulu 0-0 Chiefs, and the home side had Mothwa to thank for the scoreline.

Barely a minute into the second half, Memela got behind the Chiefs defence right-hand side, before sliding the ball past Akpeyi to give AmaZulu the lead.

It remained 1-0 to AmaZulu after 60 minutes as they continued to manage the game well without giving Chiefs enough space to shoot.

At this stage, Chiefs were playing way too deep for a team that was trailing and that suited AmaZulu who were only worried about protecting their lead.

The final 15 minutes didn’t produce any fireworks until the late drama in the dying minutes of the game.

Substitute Lebogang Manyama’s attempted cross was adjudged to have hit Tapelo Xoki in the hand inside the box but when Chiefs appealed for a penalty, the referee didn’t look interested.

The referee would then change his a MINUTE later, awarding Chiefs a penalty which left AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy furious.

Dolly then stepped up and fired home the equalizer to rescue a point for the Soweto giants.
