Kaizer Chiefs are thought to be pursuing an alternative target after pulling out of a race for a top goalkeeper

It is no secret that Chiefs were interested in signing Stanley Nwabali from Chippa United as their next goalkeeper.

Nwabali, who currently plies his trade for the Eastern Cape-based side, was a surprise inclusion as first choice for Nigeria at Afcon. This was due to the fact that he had only one cap for the Super Eagles prior to the showpiece. He would end up playing all seven games for Nigeria in Ivory Coast, keeping four clean sheets. He also played a huge role in the team finishing as runners-up at the tournament. That also saw his name and reputation skyrocket, with more European clubs reportedly on his radar, making things difficult for Chiefs.

Chiefs move on from Nwabali

Beyond European interest, Chiefs arch-rivals Orlando Pirates were also believed to have entered the race. In fact, this publication had reported they were willing to swap Ghana’s number one Richard Ofori for Nwabali. That deal is also thought to involve a cash exchange. Whatever the Buccaneers end up doing in their pursuit, doesn’t seem like Amakhosi will be willing to match.

Now earlier this week, this publication reported that Chiefs were looking to return to Richards Bay’s Salim Magoola. Furthermore, it has now been suggested that Amakhosi are also interested in Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Veli Mothwa.

Although back as AmaZulu number one, Mothwa has spent the bulk of the season as second choice. Some schoolboy errors saw the veteran drop down the pecking order at Usuthu. Those were uncharacteristic for the club captain whose consistency in previous seasons saw him linked with Pirates. Now with the Buccaneers seemingly sorted in that department, it looks like Chiefs are the ones eyeing him.

Add Mothwa to their list?

According to Soccer-Laduma, Chiefs have added Mothwa to their list of possible goalkeeper signings. This could make sense because, current veteran keeps Itumeleng Khune could either leave the club or retire. Having another experienced keeper come in along side Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen could be a trump card.
