Khune named both Cyril Nzama and Fabian McCarthy as the best central pairing from when he was given his big break against Jomo Cosmos in Durban.

And Mathoho’s name also came up alongside that of Tefu Mashamaite, Morgan Gould and Mokete Tsotetsi.

Furthermore, the 33-year-old goalkeeper reserved a special mention for former teammate and Ghana international Jonathan Quartey.

Quartey spent the 2008-09 season with Amakhosi before being sold to French outfit OGC Nice for the 2009-10 campaign.

“There is a lot of great players, great defenders that I played against or with,” said Khune in an interview with Vodacom Soccer.

“But the ones that stand out… during my early days when I got promoted and started playing regularly, I remember very well, it was captain Cyril Nzama and Fabian McCarthy,” he continued.

“And they were such great leaders and they gave me confidence in my first match against Cosmos at Absa Stadium in Durban, and they were like, ‘Don’t be scared, shout at us if you have to’.

“So, that’s how I become confident and now I am one of the goalkeepers that are vocal and that can give instructions to any player that is playing in front of me.

Khune added: “So, the Cyril Nzama, Fabian McCarthy combination was great, and the Erick Mathoho, Tefu Mashaimate combination was great. Erick Mathoho and Morgan Gould… and Morgan Gould and Tefu Mashamaite.”

“Even Jonathan Quartey – he was a youngster in the team but he was such a great defender from Ghana. He helped us a lot.

“And there was also Mokete Tsotetsi. So, there’s a lot of players I can mention but I’d like to apologize to those I don’t mention. You guys were also great players because whoever wears this jersey deserves to be here and served the club with flying colours,” concluded Khune.
