The future of Itumeleng Khune at Kaizer Chiefs remains in doubt after the 37-year-old keeper was not part of the travelling team.

Amakhosi players and technical team have flown to Istanbul where they’ll spend three weeks as part of their preseason training. The fan favourite was spotted at Naturena last week as the team returned for preseason. His contract expired last month but many were expecting the former Bafana Bafana star to be handed a new one.

According to UNPLAYABLE, Itu Khune was nowhere to be seen when Kaizer Chiefs left for Turkey.

“The issue is he wants to continue playing and you know what the club said last year. So, it looks like he’s not even traveling with the team to Turkey,” UNPLAYABLE said.

Amakhosi are expected to announce Nasreddine Nabi as their head coach very soon. The 58-year-old will assess the situation once he joins the team in Istanbul over the weekend.

Khune might be force to leave Kaizer Chiefs next season

Khune was among eight players whose contracts ended last month. Jasond Gonzalez, Sifiso Hlanti, Keagan Dolly, Siyethemba Sithebe and Njabulo Ngcobo have left the club after their contracts were not renewed. In May, Khune made it clear that he was not retiring after Kaizer Chiefs honoured him in a league match.

“This journey is still long,” he told SuperSport TV after the Polokwane City game.

“We’re still going to see each other, we’re still going to travel together, as much as we have been travelling it and I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me.

“It’s not a farewell. The club made it clear that they are honouring me for 25 years of service. They(Chiefs) didn’t say ‘we’re bidding farewell to Itumeleng Khune’.

The keeper made it clear he was not ready to retire and might feature for a different team next season.
