Khune turning out in the colours of the Carling All Stars XI did not disappoint as he rolled back the years to some of his finest Chiefs and Bafana Bafana form.

Khune suspended by Chiefs

Speaking of Chiefs, Khune had been enduring a torrid time at the club, with his form being questionable in a period of ratchet form. To further exasperate the situation, the veteran goalkeeper found himself involved in some controversy after he was punished by the club for arriving at their training ground under the influence of alcohol. That tarnished his role model image and also saw his captain’s armband stripped away from him.

Now having not seen any action for Chiefs since October, Khune was voted for by the majority of PSL supporters to be the goalkeeper of the Carling All Stars XI side. For a while it seemed as if that would be in vein as the club reiterated that the goal minder was suspended from all football activities, not just those to do with the club. The misunderstanding was eventually cleared and the former Bafana Bafana international was allowed to take his place in the team and captain.

Man of the Match performance vs Stellenbosch

And boy! Would the Carling All Stars XI be grateful that Khune was allowed to play, as he put in a Stella performance for the team en-route to winning the Cup after a 2-1 victory over Carling Knockout Cup winners Stellenbosch. Speaking to the media after the game Khune said he felt like his younger self again.

“I felt like a youngster today, the way I was enjoying the game, Today, it is not all about Itu; it is all about the All-Stars team. I’m happy for the DDC players, who have worked so hard to catch the eye of the soccer-loving fans, and they [fans] managed to vote for them. I’m happy for them [youngsters] for winning the gold medal. It gives them extra motivation to know how it feels like to win a cup in a packed stadium. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to making sure that we prepare well for this game, as we all know that Stellenbosch is a very good team, the current champions of the Carling knockout Cup and I’m happy that we managed to match them.” Said Khune according to FARPost.

Where to from here?

It will now be interesting to see where Khune’s Chiefs career goes from here, as the club still has not said anything about his return from the suspension.
