Tshegofatso Mabasa scored a hat-trick to inspire Orlando Pirates to a dominant 7-1 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The 27-year-old has bagged 10 league goals this season having been on loan from Moroka Swallows until January.

After two tough fixtures on the road, Pirates needed a win to keep their CAF Champions League chances alive.

Arrows were the first side to create a clear goal-scoring opportunity but let the Buccaneers off the hook in the first 10 minutes. The home side then grew in confidence and Makhehlene Makhaula’s stinging shot from just inside the box was parried by goalkeeper Sifiso Mlungwana who could only guide it as far as the approaching Tshegofatso Mabasa, who gave Pirates the lead

Relebohile Mofokeng made it 2-0 following an excellent diagonal pass from Patrick Maswanganyi. The teenager displayed composure by rounding off the Arrows keeper and placing the ball in the net.

The third goal came just after the hour mark through Kabelo Dlamini, who was unmarked as he received a piercing through-ball from Mofokeng before firing past Mlungwana with a well-taken shot.

The home side had an opportunity to extend their lead further on the stroke of halftime after Maswanganyi was fouled inside the box, Tshegofatso Mabasa stepped up to take the penalty, but Mlungwana denied the Pirates man.

The in-form Bucs striker however did not have to wait long to grab his second, which came just six minutes after the break when he finished from close range, turning a superb cross from Thabiso Lebitso into the net

Mabasa eventually completed his hat-trick with 12 minutes to go as Pirates scored seven past Arrows.

“I don’t have enough words to describe how I’m feeling right now and the game we just managed to display for the people here. I mean we had to fix the mistakes we made in our past two games. Because I felt we deserved the three points but we never took our chances and today we took our chances and the scoreline reflects that perfectly.

“It’s crazy, this is a talented team, honestly if we can believe in the abilities we have, and work together as a team and listen to instructions, we can go very far,” he said.

Tshegofatso Mabasa explained his celebration, saying he wanted to alert Pirates fans that he was back.

Just for people to know that I’m back home, and here to score goals. That’s what I want people to know,” he said after the match.
