Mamelodi Sundowns are edging closer to defending their DStv Premiership as their rivals continue to drop crucial points.

Well, it became evident right at the start of the season that Sundowns would easily clinch the title as there’s no enough competition from other PSL team.

For Sundowns, it is a matter of how many points they want to win the league more than anything.

Now, following Stellenbosch FC’s 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United on Wednesday, things have become a lot easier for Sundowns.

HOW MANY POINTS DO SUNDOWNS NEED TO WIN THE LEAGUE?

As things stand, Sundowns are on 53 points after just 21 games – and they lead second-placed Stellenbosch FC with a whopping 13 points.

Stellies have collected 40 points after 23 games, meaning they can finish the season with 61 points provided they win all their remaining matches.

Now, Sundowns have 27 points to play for, meaning they an finish on 80 points if they win their remaining matches.

However, they just need eight points to equal Stellies’ possible points tally, but NINE points are all they need to clinch a record-extending seventh league title.

Mind you, Sundowns are unbeaten in the league this season – they have won 16 and drawn five of the 21 games played.

Furthermore, the Brazilians have a rich goal difference (+30) having scored 37 goals and conceding just seven so far.

RULANI WANTS TO BREAK PITSO’S RECORD

Meanwhile, Rulani Mokwena is chasing Pitso Mosimane’s record of winning the league with 71 points since the teams were reduced to 16.

Last season, Mokwena fell short of that record as Sundowns finished the campaign on 70 points.

Now, with 27 points on offer, Mokwena is closer to breaking that record and possibly setting a new one this season.

It is up to Mokwena and this current generation of Sundowns to achieve what no PSL team has achieved in many years.
