Former SuperSport United midfielder Jamie Webber revealed that Gavin Hunt’s decision to play him out of position forced him to leave Matsatsantsa.

The 25-year-old joined Sekhukhune United during the off-season of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership and has so far scored three goals already.

Webber said it was not easy to leave Matsatsantsa but he felt the need for change having spent five years with the Pretoria club

“It wasn’t easy [leaving SuperSport]. It was my first PSL team that I played for. And I grew up in the club, I knew the players and management,” Webber said on Power FM as per FARPost.

“We’ve been in difficult situations together, that type of bond doesn’t just fade away. I still love Supersport, I think it’s a great club. But I felt that I needed to challenge myself.

“That’s why I came to Sekhukhune to become better. It was my decision to leave. Like I said, coach Gavin was using me as a right-winger. I felt like I wasn’t going to improve myself,” Webber said.

The ex-Matsatsantsa man said Hunt played him out of position as he preferred to play central of the midfield and not on the wing.

“The coach said I need to work harder. But for the time being, he’ll use me on the right wing because I’ve got good technique to cross the ball.

“So I understood why he said I have to work harder because players like Grant [Margeman] and Siphesihle Ndlovu run a lot in that position.

“They have a good energy and I think at SuperSport I didn’t have that level of energy that I have now. That’s why Gavin decided to play me on the right,” Webber said.

Webber has been phenomenal since joining Sekhukhune this season. He has played 17 games in all competitions and scored four goals.
