Ajax Cape Town midfielder, Grant Margeman has secured a dream move to Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the 2020/21 season, the player told IOL earlier in the week.

The 21-year-old has been strongly linked with the Pretoria outfit since the Urban Warriors were relegated to the first division in 2018.

Having helped the men from the Mother City obtain pole position in the championship before the league was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he is now set to trek up to the nation’s capital.

Dream move for Grant Margeman

Margeman’s contract with Ajax is set to expire at the end of the season, which made him free to sign a pre-contract with any club of his choice.

The SA youth international is looking forward to making the leap from the country’s second-tier domestic league to possibly featuring in the continent’s premier club competition.

“I’m happy to join a club as big as Sundowns, but my focus, for now, is at Ajax Cape Town. Sundowns is a big team in South Africa. They compete in Africa and they are winning titles. We’ve also seen players moving from Sundowns to overseas. That’s what I want to achieve as a player. I want to win titles, compete in Africa, play for the national team and go overseas”

From Ajax Cape Town to Mamelodi Sundowns

With his looming move, Margeman joins a long line of players who have trekked up from the Mother City to Tshwane.

The list includes the likes of Brent Carelse and Franklin Cale and, more recently, Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly – who formed part of a fabled partnership during their time at the Brazilians.

Former Ajax players who are still in the Sundowns squad are Rivaldo Coetzee and Mosa Lebusa, and both have secured regular starting spots.

Margeman faces stiff competition for a starting berth against the likes of captain Hlompho Kekana, Andile Jali and Coetzee, but draws confidence from his ex-Ajax teammates.

“Keagan Dolly did well when he left Ajax Cape Town and joined Sundowns. Rivaldo was also doing well until he got injured. Mosa Lebusa is from Ajax and is doing well at Sundowns. Those players makes me believe that I can also make it.”
