SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt explained why Pitso Mosimane was successful at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mosimane had won five PSL titles and a CAF Champions League before he left Masandawana for Al Ahly in 2020. With the Red Devils, the 59-year-old claimed two Champions League trophies and a Club World Cup bronze medal.

Hunt, who shared a good relationship with Mosimane, said the ex-Bafana Bafana coach was given time at Downs and also had stood his ground when it comes to the players he wanted at the club.

After getting sacked by Bafana early in 2012, ‘Jingles’ was appointed as coach of Sundowns later that year helping them to avoid relegation. The next season, he went on to win the league title.

“One thing about Pitso is he stood his ground when he took over at Sundowns and he got his way and got the players that he wanted,” Hunt told Peter du Toit on ThisisFootball Africa podcast.

“The foreign coaches came in, not saying they were bad coaches, they were great coaches with great CVs but I don’t think they knew the market on where to get players where else Pitso changed everything at Sundowns.

“You have to give Pitso a lot of credit because he said no to someone at the higher hierarchy.”

When asked if Mosimane would consider coaching Kaizer Chiefs, Hunt had his doubts.

“I think knowing Pitso, he has ambitions to get into the ‘first world’ league, no disrespect to where he is or where we are. First world league in terms of more publicity, bigger clubs, bigger competition where you go to a game where there are 20-30 000 people a week. I think he wants to be in that space you know, he has that avenue now,” he said.
