Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has set the record straight on whether or not the club is allowed to sign free agents now that they have served their two-window transfer ban.

Amakhosi were handed the ban in February 2020 – and they couldn’t bring in new players at the start of the season after losing the appeal for the ban.

The Soweto giants again watched from afar as their rivals bolstered their squads this year, and questions were asked as to whether or not the club is now eligible to reinforce the squad with free agents.

However, Hunt correctly pointed out that Chiefs can’t do anything, even recruit those who are out of contract.

“Under my knowledge, no we can’t [sign free agents now]. We can’t do anything, obviously until the end of the season – under my knowledge,” Hunt told reporters.

While the PSL rule book stipulates that any team can sign free agents outside of the transfer, this only applies to clubs that aren’t barred by FIFA.

So, this means Hunt and his technical team will have to wait until the upcoming transfer window to reinforce the Chiefs squad with players of their choice.

In the meantime, Amakhosi can, as they have done in recent months, recruit from within their youth structures.
