Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be pressing ahead with plans to secure the services of a new coach next season.

Arthur Zwane was in-charge at Chiefs last season, before being replaced by Molefi Ntseki ahead of the current campaign.

To the majority of the Chiefs fan base, Ntseki was already an unpopular appointment, with no positive track record. Prior to taking over the first team reigns, he had never coached a senior professional side. He did, however, coach Bafana Bafana after Stuart Baxter, before being fired for failing to qualify for AFCON 2021. The duo reunited as part of a new structure at Amakhosi, which put him in charge of football development.

Ntseki did not last long as Chiefs coach, however, being sacked before even the halfway mark of the season. This came after an unconvincing start to the campaign which also saw them knocked out of two cups. After being relieved of his duties, the club appointed Johnson to take over on an interim basis. Coincidently, Cavin Johnson also came into the club in a developmental role, before being asked to steady the senior ship.

A run which saw Chiefs winning three of their last four games of 2024, saw Johnson in with a shout. But now according to the latest, the club are back looking at other candidates. There have been the likes of Pitso Mosimane and Manqoba Mngqithi in a local sense. Internationally, Jose Peseiro, Vanderlei Luxembergo , Raul Caneda Perez and Nasreddine Nabi .

There have also been outsiders offering themselves to Chiefs, like former Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa. The latest to enter the fray according to KickOff.com is former Newcastle United player Nikodimos ‘Nikki’ Papavasiliou.

Papavasiliou interested in Chiefs job

“Kaizer Chiefs is a name that is attractive to any coach keen to work in Africa like me. This is a club with a project that I would like to look at because it is of interest to me just like I expect it is to many other coaches. It also comes with understanding the vision behind the project before taking the opportunity. It is a massive club that I see as a challenge to any coach keen on the job. I’m interested in the Chiefs job, but that will come with hearing from the relevant people first. The nature of the coaching space is that whenever there is an opportunity, there will be interest.” Said Papavasiliou.

His background

Papavasiliou is a UEFA Pro Licence holder who has worked with clubs in Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus and Egypt but lives in Prague, Czech Republic. His most recent job was in Egypt with National Bank of Egypt. He also holds the record for being the first Cypriot to play in the English Premier League, signing for Newcastle under Kevin Keagan in the 1993/94 season.
