Ex-player: “Kaizer Chiefs treated me like a side chick”

Kaizer Chiefs have been accused for favouritism by one of their former players, who was instrumental in their last league title victory.

A former Kaizer Chiefs star has come out to express his feelings about the club, after leaving the club.

In the past 15-years, it has been tough for any goalkeeper at Chiefs, due to the status of Itumeleng Khune.

Khune was promoted to the Chiefs first team 20 years ago, and has been first choice since about 2007/08 season. In that period of time many goalkeepers have come in to either challenge him or back him up. That includes the likes of Emile Baron, the late Arthur Baartman, Brilliant Khuzwayo and Daniel Akpeyi. One of those goalkeepers in Khuzwayo, has since spoken out about his time at the club.

Khuzwayo unhappy with Chiefs treatment

“If you remember correctly the last time Chiefs won a trophy it was MTN 8 and then the league, I was in goals. But the supporters were so glued that they still wanted Itu (Khune), but the numbers were not adding up. He was the favourite and sometimes there was injustice that happened in terms of him getting the number one, when he didn’t work hard to get number one. One of the downfalls of Chiefs, which is why I left Chiefs. I was like a side chick at Chiefs knowing very well that he is gonna be there.” Said Khuzwayo to Extra Time on Gagasi FM as per iDiski Times.

Khuzwayo, however, also had his own fan-favourite status at Chiefs, spending six seasons at Naturena. Even though his time at the club was mainly as a second choice goalkeeper, he was pivotal in the 2014/15 season. He would go on to make 16 starts for the club, in their last league winning campaign.

Khuzwayo would then make the controversial move from Chiefs to arch rivals Orlando Pirates, where his career was unfortunately curtailed.
