Former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United midfielder Thuso Phala claims he was denied an opportunity to play overseas.

The 37-year-old retired midfielder enjoyed a successful football career spanning over 14 years.

He played for Chiefs, Platinum Stars, SuperSport and Mamelodi Sundowns. Phala also earned 22 caps for Bafana Bafana between 2012 and 2016.

During his interview with Trap and Pass Featurin, the former Kaizer Chiefs player revealed his overseas move was denied.

Phala moved to Platinum Stars in 2010 after unsuccessful spells with Chiefs and Sundowns.

“In December 2012, Bafana announced their Afcon squad and by God’s grace, I made it to the squad,” he said.

“I went to the tournament, played all the games and had a good tournament. After Afcon, Chiefs, Pirates, Sundowns and SuperSport had offers for me.

“As we were looking at the offers, Platinum Stars came with a new three-year contract.

“They said ‘your contract is coming to an end, but here’s a new three-year contract for you to sign.”

Phala said the Platinum Stars wanted him to sign a new deal to cash in on potential overseas offers.

“They came with an offer and said here’s ‘R80 000 per month, R100 000, 120 000 for three years, sign the contract now’. I told them I want R200 000-R250 000 per month,” he said.

The ex-Kaizer Chiefs and United star said the overseas move was on but the club failed to honour his demands before everything collapsed.

“The overseas deal didn’t go through and Platinum Stars didn’t offer me that contract so I went and signed with SuperSport. My life changed and it was the biggest contract I’ve ever seen,” Phala added.

He spent seven years with Matsatsantsa, winning several trophies in the process.
