“If you play for Sundowns and join a middle-table team in England, you might as well stay at Sundowns,” ex-Pirates coach Roger De Sa.

Former Orlando Pirates coach Roger De Sa believes some local players are better off playing in the PSL as most European teams don’t pay like Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 59-year-old mentor stated that most PSL players get paid a lot and a European move sometimes doesn’t make sense.

Following Bafana Bafana’s third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations, some players were poised with a move to Europe.

Teboho Mokwena and Khuliso Mudau are some of the names that were reportedly under the radar of English teams during and after the tournament.

De Sa explained to FARPost why some local players were reluctant to move abroad.

The Former Pirates and Bidvest Wits coach said teams like Sundowns reward their players with lucrative salaries.

“There are reasons why few players move to Europe, and money is part of it. After the Afcon, most South African players attracted interest,” De Sa was quoted on FARPost.

“But players see no point in going to Europe because they get paid a lot of money. If you play for Sundowns and join a middle-table team in England, you might as well stay at Sundowns.”

Ex-Pirates coach urges Sundowns players to decide wisely

The former Bafana keeper said most European mid-table teams don’t pay good money.

“People think playing in Europe comes with a lot of money, which is not the case because there are teams that pay like PSL teams,” Roger De Sa added.

“I think going to Europe is also about sacrifices that you make when you move there, and sometimes, I feel like our players are not ready for those sacrifices.”

In the past two decades, many local players have failed to establish themselves in Europe.

The likes of Mbulelo ‘OJ’ Mabizela, Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi, Siyabonga Nkosi, and Bryce Moon to name a few, lasted less than three years.

The former Pirates coach Roger De Sa suggested Sundowns players look for a bigger club if they are to leave Chloorkop.
