Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp says his side need to strengthen their squad to stand a better chance of surviving relegation from the DStv Premiership this season.

The Mother City side have endured a nightmare return to the South African top-flight with just three points from their opening 14 matches.

Middendorp was brought in to replace Shaun Bartlett, but has also been unable to find a solution to the club’s problems and wants to dive into the transfer market in January.

Before then, Spurs face AmaZulu and Cape Town City, ahead of the mid-season break.

Ernst Middendorp said according to the Sowetan: “For me it’s about finding solutions with what we have and also to think about what could be done, what should be done and what can be done.

“It’s a question of budget and networking. At the moment you can’t do anything, you have to wait for the transfer window.”

Middendorp added: “You have to be realistic, we have to find a way to get closer in December. We have two games to play [before the end of the year], we have a few days before the next game and the derby too. There are things we have to work on.”

Cape Town Spurs are bottom of the DStv Premiership standings having scored just 10 goals and conceded 30 in their 14 matches to date.

Their next fixture against AmaZulu will be away from home on Friday, 22 December at 19:30.

Spurs will wrap up their year on New Year’s Eve at home against Cape Town City at 15:30.
