Amakhosi lost 2-1 to lowly Swallows in their Soweto derby fixture at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Swallows grabbed an lead in the seventh minute through Gregory Damons in the seventh minute, only for Christian Saile Basomboli to equalise for the Glamour Boys in the 23rd minute.

However, The Birds regained the lead 10 minutes later through Bongani Sam.

And that’s the way the score stayed until the final whistle, handing stand-in skipper Itumeleng Khune a crushing defeat on his recall to the starting XI.

As a reminder, the team finishing second in the final standings will join already-crowned champions Mamelodi Sundowns in representing South Africa in Africa’s premier club competition, the CAF Champions League, next season.

The third-placed overall finisher will enter the CAF Confederation Cup.

Swallows jumped all the way from 13th to eighth place following their victory.

Amakhosi only have two matches remaining – and tough ones at that.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs’ next match is a blockbuster home Nedbank Cup semi-final against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, 6 May at the FNB Stadium at 15:00.
