Dear Jomo: Give this Orlando Pirates player the number 10 jersey

Orlando Pirates icon Jomo Sono described the requirements for the jersey number 10. There is a player who meets the criteria.

Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono give the club the go ahead to release the number 10 jersey in 2015. Sono seemingly changed his mind in 2022. It is now time to revise his views.

The last player to wear the jersey was the great Steve Lekoelea. The jersey was later retired after Lekoelea was thought to be conducting himself unprofessionally off the field. Orlando Pirates jersey number 10 has been in retirement for over twenty years.

The iconic Sono later decided to encourage the club to release the sacred jersey from retirement.

“I really don’t have a problem with anyone wearing it at Pirates,” Sono said, as quoted by News24 in 2015.

“To be honest with you, they [Pirates] can give it to anybody they want. The jersey doesn’t play football, it is the player who plays. Back then, it was not the no.10 jersey on Jomo that played, but it was Jomo playing for [Orlando] Pirates wearing jersey no.10.

“So it’s just that it got stuck with me and everyone believed that I’m the only one who deserves to wear it. When I was playing for Pirates I was just passionate, I just wanted to play football for the team. What number jersey I was wearing didn’t bother me at all.

“But if you ask people who saw me playing for Pirates during my time and you take the jersey and try give it to any of the current players, trust me you will not give it to anyone now. And that’s the answer from me case closed, but it’s up to [Orlando] Pirates to decide who they want to give it to. But for me I haven’t seen anybody who deserves to wear it yet,” Sono concluded.

The legend known as the “Black Prince” made somewhat of a contrasting view in 2022. Sono, sounding annoyed, blasted the idea of handing the Orlando Pirates jersey to Monnapule Saleng.

“At this point in time, there is no one because the Jomo they are talking about… the one who used to wear the No.10 jersey, was unique, he was different,” Sono said in 2022.

“He was skillful, he was a hardworker, he could score goals from anywhere. I heard somebody saying, ‘Saleng scored a goal that Jomo never scored’,” he added.

“But Jomo and Professor Ngubane scored 10 similar goals to that one (of Saleng against AmaZulu). Even worse, sometimes it was from the corner kick straight into the net.

“So, there is no one you can compare (to Jomo) now. If you look at Jomo, he used to play with both feet, the player they want to compare (with Jomo) plays with one foot,” the Orlando Pirates great concluded.

Meanwhile, a new player emerged at the end of the season in the 2022/23 season. The 17-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng earned his debut in the last match of the season against Royal AM at the Orlando Stadium.

From the start to the end of the game, he dazzled defenders with unpredictable turns, and take-ons before his deflected shot found the net on 56 minutes. It was sadly marked as an own goal.

The teenager from Sharpville with number 38 on his back, basically stole the show with that arrogance and ball confidence Orlando Pirates fans love to see. While AM’s Jabulani Ncobeni took home the Man of the Match gong, Mofokeng was truly unlucky to miss the award.

Although Mofokeng only has three goals and four assists in 29 matches at the age of 19, his ability is unbelievable. After flying to English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers for trials last year, Mofokeng will not be around for a very long time here in Mzansi. He deserves the Orlando Pirates jersey number 10, but next season might be too late.

Meanwhile, Wolves told Mofokeng they will communicate their decision soon.
