Mamelodi Sundowns have strengthened their squad with more superstars, which will affect the younger players.

With Sundowns adding more firepower, that could see the club’s youngsters pathway to the first team blocked.

Despite already cruising in the DStv Premiership, Sundowns were the most active side in the January window. The Brazilians already have a nine-point gap on second placed Cape Town City, with three games in hand. Thad did not stop them from pursuing a squad boost ahead of the second half of the season. Then when everybody thought that they had strengthened enough, they added Thembinkosi Lorch and Tashreeq Matthews. That shopping spree is already set to affect certain first team players ahead of the second half of the season. With that being said, imagine the effect it will have on the youngsters who were getting a few look ins?

The likes of Siyabonga Mabena, Ntando Nkosi and Jerome Karelse. It is now almost certain they will spend the rest of the season playing for Sundowns’ DStv Diski Challenge side. Some may understand and trust the process, others may have a grim view of their prospects of a first team breakthrough. Karelse is one that seems to be open to making a move elsewhere, having previously attracted interest from Kaizer Chiefs.

Could Chiefs regnite interest in Karelse?

“I have heard there are interested clubs but I can’t reveal anything as they have been waiting on Sundowns to release Jerome (Karelse) but they are not forthcoming. So if they know that there is interest they will delay even more. And it seems there is no plans for him and they keep on buying strikers, so the player just wants to move on and get on with his career,” said a source to Soccer-Laduma.

It was previously reported that Chiefs tried to sign Karelse while Arthur Zwane was till part of the Academy structures. It is thought that Amakhosi missed out in the end, because Sundowns moved quicker to secure the player’s signature. Now, with that being said, they could get a second bite at cherry.
