Chippa United suffered defeat in their first fixture at their makeshift home venue, Orlando Stadium, where they were edged 1-0 by Cape Town City on Friday.

An early strike by Bafana striker Kermit Erasmus proved the difference between the two sides, who went into the fixture looking to escape the bottom half of the table.

A cautious start from both sides saw neither surging forward with great intent inside the first 15 minutes, until Fagrie Lakay fired the first shot in anger, but without reward.

This was two minutes before he combined with Erasmus, who was left unmarked and headed into the back of the net to give City an early lead, in the process grabbing his tenth goal of the season.

The first half went by without much incident, and there wasn’t much in terms of goalmouth action in the opening stages of the second 22.

However, in the 77th minute, City had a golden opportunity to seal the result when Morris broke free after gathering a fine pass from Mdantsane, finding himself one-on-one Mazibuko.

However, the former Ajax Cape Town marksman’s attempt at goal was kept out by the shot-stopper.

The next notable action of the game could have seen Chippa level matters, after Augustine Kwem attempted a long-range strike after spotting that Peter Leeuwenburg had left his goal unattended.

However, Taariq Fielies was positioned to make a clearance, safeguarding Citys lead to hand them a crucial three points, their third maximum haul in a row.
