Just as Orlando Pirates fans were starting to rekindle their affection for striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, it seems the striker may once again be leaving the club.

This time though, the 27-year-old might leave permanently. Having spent 18 months on loan to Sekhukhune United and Moroka Swallows, Mabasa was recalled in January. He scored six times for Swallows in the first half of the season, forcing Pirates to end his loan early.

For Orlando Pirates, the striker has scored 10 times and provided an assist in 12 league matches. The club’s coach Jose Riveiro was full of praise for the former Bloemfontein Celtic footballer.

“With Mabasa I think it meant more than the goals,” said Riveiro as per KickOff.

“Like I have said several times, He has had a really good impact with the group. [He is] contributing in every moment of the game, in defending, in attacking, in set pieces, he was a very important player for us in the second part of the season.

“Always available for selection and he is now getting the reward for the hard work that he was putting in the other half of the season at [Moroka] Swallows,” the Spaniard added.

“Overall, A really good season for him and hopefully, he can replicate these types of performances in the future for us, here at Pirates.”

Orlando Pirates might look to hold on to their striker for next season. The Sea Robbers have three other strikers who have failed to fire the team this season. Kermit Erasmus, Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa struggled for form and consistency with Mabasa being the saving grace. The Buccaneers are in action this weekend against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final.

The Orlando Pirates striker has been linked with a move to FCSB, home to former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana.
