Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has given more insights on why ex-Kaizer Chiefs duo Darrel Matsheke and Kgaogelo Sekgota were released.

The two players were shown the door by Stellies over discipline issues this year.

Sekgota was the first player to part ways with the Cape-based side back in February. The 26-year-old made 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring once.

He struggled to make an impact at Kaizer Chiefs however Barker gave him an opportunity but wasted it.

Matsheke joined Stellies in October last year from Kaizer Chiefs but earlier this month, but left Barker’s men after his contract was terminated.

It was reported the fight broke out after Barker discovered Matsheke had signed a pre-contract with Pirates.

“It was a huge fight between Darrel and coach Steve, we were all shocked at training. There was a story about Matsheke saying that he signed for Pirates, and coach Steve wasn’t happy about that. He was not happy because Darrel had promised to extend his stay at the club,” Citizen reported last week.

On Saturday, Barker made it clear why the ex-Kaizer Chiefs duo left the club.

“It’s important that we’re a club that one of our mottos and slogans is modern football. So, we’re there to support and help players to be professional about what they do,” said Barker.

Barker said the club supported ex-Kaizer Chiefs duo BUT…

“And in both instances, we were there to support and help the players and give them the level of counselling and support throughout,” he said after the Miflord match as per FARPost.

“But you know, unfortunately, sometimes you just reach the stage where you can not continue [tolerating] the behaviour. Then the club had to make a stand.”

Stellenbosch are in the last eight of the Nedbank following a 6-1 win over Milford FC.
