Cape Town City have handed former Orlando Pirates defender Abbubaker Mobara a contract extension until June 2023.

The Mother City-based club took to their social media platforms to announce they have triggered the option to extend Mobara’s stay.

“The club is delighted to confirm that we have exercised the option to extend the contract of defender Abbubaker Mobara. He signs until June 2023,” Cape Town City wrote.

Abbubaker Mobara is one of City’s senior players who have brought about stability in the club since their arrivals.

He joined Cape Town City in July 2019, and that was soon after ending his relationship with the Buccaneers following what was a frustrating three seasons for him.

It was former Bucs marksman and now AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy who handed Mobara’s career a lifeline, and current coach, Jan Olde Riekerink, continued help the versatile player improve.

Mobara has already played 10 games across all competitions this season – and he has a goal and an assist under his belt.

And it’s not shocking that he was recently linked with a sensational return to Pirates who are believed to have earmarked Mobara as a long-term solution to their aging central defence.

At 26, Mobara is at his peak but it his experience – both local and international – that has seen teams register their interest in him.

He has represented South Africa at the U23 and senior team levels and he’s yet to open his international goalscoring account.
