It is still unclear which club Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau will be turning out for in the upcoming season, but the player is focused on the national team’s Afcon bid.

Tau spent last season in Belgium’s second tier, where he was crowned player of the season, after bagging 13 goals and as many assists across competitions.

This was after signing for English Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion, who loaned him out to Royal Union Saint Gilloise after being unable to secure a work permit.

The work permit issue still hangs over the former Mamelodi Sundowns player, and his future in Europe is further complicated by the recent sacking of Brighton manager Chris Hughton, who was instrumental in him moving abroad.

Uncertain future for Tau at Brighton

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Tau revealed that he and Hughton had a good relationship.

“I only focus on football. I had a good relationship with him [Hughton]. He’s the coach that signed me so, for sure, he has a soft spot for me, as I do.

“But I think that’s football and I’m not in control, so I don’t think so much about it.”

The 25-year-old will be one of the key players in the Bafana squad on their return to Afcon, having missed out on qualification last time around.

He added that the national team is exactly where his immediate focus is.

“At the moment, it’s only to focus on Bafana Bafana. I don’t think I’ll want to get my mind into that.”
