How Orlando Pirates signed striker Marou

The forward arrived in South Africa from Cameroon Premier League’s Coton Sport FC with a big reputation in January 2023. Afterall, he had just broken all sorts of records in the domestic league in Cameroon. Marou had bagged the 2022 Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year gongs. Additionally, the lanky front-man was Coton Sport’s leading scorer in the 2022 CAF Champions League.

Why life at Orlando Pirates hasn’t been rosy for the Cameroonian

However, life has not been rosy for the 23-year-old in the DStv Premiership. He has featured in a few games for the Ghosts so far this season. The Cameroonian finds himself down the pecking order for Orlando Pirates’ attackers. Marou is scavenging for game-time alongside compatriot Eva Nga, Evidence Makgopa, Kermit Erasmus and Zakhele Lepasa.  Coach Jose Riveiro has made Makgopa and Lepasa his preferred starters upfront. The rest of the players, including Marou, are having to sit either on the substitutes’ bench or in the terraces.

It is in that regard that Makaab has admitted being equally puzzled by the Cameroonian’s situation. In a response to a football fan called Mthobisi Njapha, the agent said: “I am as puzzled as you are to be honest….”The football follower had, through his account @TheClean_Addict, asked Makaab as to what had befallen Marou at Pirates.  “I would like to know what happened to Souaibou Marou. High praises were made about him before he signed to Pirates,” Njapha had written to @MikeMakaab on December 23 2023.

What makes the agent equally surprised

The conversation between the former Pirates-coach-turned agent continued with the x-com audience. The following day, Makaab took exception to another comment by a social media follower who goes by the name of Life is Good @Moleane14. The fan Moleane14 had suggested that the Cameroonian was a fraud- signing. Such remarks did not please the player’s manager.

How the conversation between Makaab and the fans panned out

“You call him a fraud signing, [yet he was the] top goal scorer. Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year in Cameroon. [Scorer of] Goal of the Year in Cameroon. Only local player in the Cameroon WC squad in 2022. Less than 18 months ago, club’ s top goal scorer in the CAF Champions League,” Makaab hit back. The agent said it was unfair calling his client such names, adding: “And has not been given a chance to play as a striker in the PSL, be careful who you call a fraud…” Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if Marou will get a sniff of action when Pirates host Stellenbosch FC in a DStv Premiership game on December 29 2023 at 8pm.
