Mamelodi Sundowns continue to dominate the domestic scene, but Orlando Pirates legend Teko Modise says Jose Riveiro will stop them.
Modise argues that Riveiro is building a giant at Pirates, but he is unfairly judged by his critics.
Riveiro has yet to win the DStv Premiership title with Pirates, but he boasts three knockout cup trophies.
The Spaniard is the reigning Nedbank Cup champion and has two MTN8 gold medals since his arrival at Pirates.
Modise also says Riveiro is unfairly judged after arriving at Pirates in 2022 and states that he will stop Sundowns very soon.
WHY PIRATES LEGEND SAYS RIVEIRO WILL STOP SUNDOWNS DOMINANCE
Looking at Riveiro’s debut campaign, he managed to lift the Wafa Wafa and Ke Yona titles MTN8 and achieved a second finish in the league.
“It’s unfair to say that coach Jose is only a cup-winning coach and not a league-winning coach,” Modise tells Phakaaathi.
“Mamelodi Sundowns have a way (of winning the league), they have a formula.
“So we can’t look it in a way and say Pirates have a problem because they are not winning the league.
“Who has been winning the league in the past 10 seasons? It’s been Mamelodi Sundowns!
“If you then say Pirates have a problem, then the other 14 teams in the league also have a problem.
“So we can’t just look at one team and say ‘Pirates have a problem because they’re not winning the league’, no, we have to look at it holistically.
“Looking at the squad and the quality of the team, Pirates maybe the only team right now.
“They can maybe compete with Sundowns, which we know how difficult that may be.”
RIVEIRO IS THE BEST IN THE ELAGUE TO CHALLENGE SUNDOWNS
The midfield powerhouse in his playing days, Modise adds that the Buccaneers mentor, Riveiro is not far from Sundowns coaches.
Riveiro is now challenging to defend the Ke Yona trophy, and he is in the quarter-finals with Sundowns.
“I mean, which other coach has been winning the league except the Sundowns coaches?” adds the Pirates legend about Sundowns.
“Look at him coming to join Pirates almost two years ago; what has he achieved?
“So we can’t overlook the things he has done because he has not won the league title.
“We saw how Pirates did in the second half of the season last season.
“We want to see Pirates competing with Sundowns because when Pirates and (Kaizer) Chiefs compete with Sundowns, then our league becomes exciting.”
