MTN8 next season: Mad scramble for spots

The top eight in the PSL play in next season’s MTN8 but there are as many as ten teams still in the running at this stage of the campaign.

The top eight in the PSL – and next season’s MTN8 lineup – is far from guaranteed despite just a few games to go in the current campaign.

It’s been a season for the ages really.

Only thing is certain … that Sundowns are the best team in the land and champions.

Sundowns the only given certainty in the PSL

Who is going to join them in the CAF Champions League? Orlando Pirates lead the way, followed by SuperSport United while Kaizer Chiefs are still chasing hard with three games to play.

That leaves the top four decided albeit we have no idea who will actually finish second, third and fourth.

It seems fairly clear that Maritzburg United and Chippa United will occupy 15th and 16th – again, we don’t know who’s dropping out of the PSL and who’s dropping into the relegation/promotion playoff game.

And then comes the MTN8 2023/24 scramble.

It’s impossible to say who will take up the remaining four places on offer. Cape Town City looked like certainties before their four-game winless run. It’s a run that has this whole picture so blurred. Just think, they lose to Royal AM next and the team in ninth, outside of the MTN8 places, goes above them.

You can’t script this.

Amazulu haven’t won in four games and have just one point in that span but are only four points off Golden Arrows in eighth.

Perhaps the only team you would have to argue against having a realistic chance is Richards Bay given their dismal fall from grace.
