Greenwood NOT necessarily back for Man United

Big questions have again been raised after Mason Greenwood was named on Manchester United’s retained player list.

There is still no clarity on Mason Greenwood’s future at Manchester United, but the club has reportedly turned down offers for the striker, which some football fans have perceived to be an indication he could be in the team’s planning for next season.

The 21-year-old remains contracted to United until the middle of 2025, but has not played for the Red Devils since January 22 last year, just before allegations of rape and assault came to light.

The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service ultimately dropped the charges, but Manchester United have yet to reveal the outcome of an internal investigation.

On Friday, Greenwood was included on the list of players being retained by Manchester United, but it’s understood that he had to be named as he is still under contract.

However, a decision is still to come on his future at the club, and so he is not necessarily set to be back for the Red Devils next season.

It was recently reported that he had been told that he will not return to United training in the near future as an internal investigation continues.

Some reports out of the UK now suggest that the youngster has ‘told his friends he will NEVER play for Manchester United again’.

“Mason believes he’s finished at United,” a source close to the playmaker told The Sun in April. “He’s sat at home kicking his heels and very frustrated. He wants to get back playing football but realises his situation is very complicated and it’s his own doing.

“He is determined to play football again but doesn’t think he’ll ever pull on a United shirt ever again.”

IT’S BEEN NEARLY 18 MONTHS SINCE GREENWOOD LAST PLAYED COMPETITIVE FOOTBALL

Earlier this year, it was reported that a variety of options are being considered in a possible phased return to Manchester United action.

This divisive talk came after it was dramatically confirmed that all attempted rape and assault charges were dropped against Greenwood after more than a year under investigation.

However, it still remains to be seen what actions United will take, with the only statement to date reading as follows: “The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

THERE ARE REPORTS THAT SOME CLUBS HAVE ENQUIRED ABOUT THE STRIKER

If he were to remain at the club, United would apparently look to take into account the views of fan groups, sponsors and the United women’s team at varying stages.

The club would also reportedly want Greenwood to take part in rehabilitation, which would involve counselling or therapy. Quite strangely, this may even include facing a TV interview “in which he is challenged on the events that have taken him to this point”.
