Man United legend still in ICU but ‘not in life-threatening danger’

Former Man United and Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was taken to hospital following a bleed around the brain.

Man United legend Edwin van der Sar remains in intensive care but is “communicative” and “not in life-threatening danger,” his former club Ajax said.

Last week Friday, the 52-year-old was taken to hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

“Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable. He is not in life-threatening danger. Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop,” said Ajax Amsterdam in a statement this week.

“On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery,” Ajax said in a statement.

The former Man United stopper recently resigned from his position as a Chief Executive Officer of Ajax. He transfered his duties to his colleagues on the Board of Directors from 1 June 2023.

Last week, Man United took to their social media to wish Van der Sar well.

“Sending all our love and strength to you, Edwin,” said his former club on Twitter.

Van der Sar played over 300 games for Ajax and 200 for Man United in his 20 year football career. He was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2008 squad that won the UEFA Champions League.

Following his retirement from football, van der Sar worked as a Chief Executive Officer of Ajax Amsterdam.
