Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender Lucas Radebe says a lot needs to be done to improve the standard of South African football.

Speaking to Sowetan Live, the 53-year-old said one of the biggest issues was the lack of leadership in football in the country.

“We need to be more professional, look at the lifestyle of our players. Even in the national team, it is not up to scratch. We have the talent, it is the leadership that is lacking and that is a big thing for us,” said Radebe.

Two decades ago, Bafana Bafana was one of the best countries in Africa and the DStv Premiership was rated the best in Africa but since then, everything has gone backwards.

“If we can change that, we will have progress in our football. There is a lot that we are missing in the country to get to the level where we can compete against some of the best in the world, Radebe added.

“Actually, we have gone backwards throughout the years. We are not in the top five on the continent. It is not a disgrace, but it is a big disappointment, and it boils down to the structures in the administration level.

“We need new ideas; we need new people that will run football. Football has evolved, and it needs professionalism.”

Last week, Radebe also gave his thoughts on Molefi Ntseki, who was appointed the new head coach of Kaizer Chiefs. Like many, the former Bafana captain was not convinced by the appointment.

“I think for me, I thought we’d get somebody better, not that Ntseki is not good enough, but I don’t think he’s proven enough to be a quality coach for a big club like Kaizer Chiefs,” Radebe said.

“It’s a mismatch for me, but I might be wrong. He might take Kaizer Chiefs to greater heights this season, but for that, we’ll have to wait and see.”
