Manqoba Ngwenya backs rested Mamelodi Sundowns to stun Wydad Casablanca in the AFL final on Sunday in Tshwane.

Ngwenya is a retired Sundowns midfielder and says the week-long break will help his former club as they will face Wydad in the second leg of the final.

Sundowns lost the first leg of the final on Sunday night via a 2-1 margin and the former midfielder says scoring an away goal is a boost for coach Rulani Mokwena’s side.

LEGEND BACKS RESTED SUNDOWNS TO STUN WYDAD IN TSHWANE

The dribbling wizard who was famous for his flashy hairstyle is confident Sundowns are capable of overturning the 2-1 defeat.

“I’m very optimistic that they will win the return leg at home. We are capable. We are a strong team. We have a goal and I think we should try to score early,” Ngwenya tells Sowetan.

“We are better than them and we are playing at home. We just need to go out there and find a way of scoring goals and beat these guys.”

Having seen their midweek DStv Premiership fixture against AmaZulu postponed, the former Wits University star and legend says that is good news for the Chloorkop-based side.

FRESH SUNDOWNS TO LIFT INAUGURAL AFL CUP IN TSHWANE

Ngwenya adds that the first leg in Morocco was a demanding affair and the postponement comes as a huge relief for Sundowns.

“I think that will help them a lot in terms of getting the full team back… the recovery of the muscles from the guys that played in the first leg,” adds the legend.

“It was a very taxing match, so they needed it [postponement].

“Wydad have also postponed their domestic game to focus on the final. I think that will make for a good match. Both teams are well-rested and it is going to be fireworks.

“I’m proud of how Sundowns handled that pressure playing in North Africa in that type of atmosphere.

“Hopefully, this time we can get one over Wydad. We won’t forget how they hurt us the last time in the Champions League semifinal and it’s time for a revenge now.”
