Inspirational Zwane reveals AFCON and Bafana ambitions

Seasoned Bafana Bafana attacker Themba Zwane reveals his ambitions ahead of the AFCON tournament in Cote d‘Ivoire.

Mshishi and his teammates will face off against Mali in their Group E AFCON opener on Tuesday and says he wants to have a perfect start to 2024.

The Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana talisman, Zwane says doing well at the continental showpiece will be a perfect start to the new year.

Under coach Hugo Broos, there’s no doubt that Bafana’s game plan at AFCON will revolve around the 34-year-old in the West African nation.

At the same time, Zwane also touches on Sundowns’ plans and ambitions, stating that they are setting their sights on lifting the DStv Premiership trophy.

The creative attacker born in Tembisa might be on his last AFCON this year considering his age but is seemingly not considering retirement as yet.

“Doing well at AFCON will be a perfect way to start the year, and I can’t wait for the tournament to begin,” Zwane told the Sundowns magazine.

“For Mamelodi Sundowns, we are dreaming big to achieve greatness. We would love to win the seventh consecutive league title.

“The CAF Champions League is also on our agenda and we hope to participate in the Club World Cup.”

While Zwane remains one of the most decorated players in the Bafana squad as he boasts all the gold medals on offer in the PSL, including the CAF Champions League and Super Cup, he still has a lot to learn.

This is because of Broos’ sentiments and warning to his troops as The South African reported, the Belgian mentor says the continental showpiece is demanding.

However, as this will be Zwane’s third AFCON appearance, Broos will definitely look to the Sundowns skipper for inspiration and leadership in the heart of the park.

“I think I have to give my experience to the players. They have to be aware that this is a tough tournament and even guys from [Mamelodi] Sundowns, who play in the CAF Champions League, can’t compare that with a match at Afcon,” Broos said.
