A shocking armed robbery targeting South African football legends Aaron Mokoena and David Nyathi has sent shockwaves through the nation.

The attack at the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Technical Centre in Fun Valley, Johannesburg, underscores deep concerns about security procedures meant to protect the heart of the Bafana Bafana organization.

The timing of this brazen incident has raised suspicions. Sources speaking to City Press newspaper allege a connection to SAFA’s recent and controversial decision to terminate its existing security contract.

“Definitely this has to do with last week’s finance committee resolution which resolved to cancel the new security company’s contract which has been marred with controversy,” a SAFA source told City Press.

Controversy erupted in December 2023 when Fortico VIP Protection Service, a Western Cape-based firm, was awarded a R5 million contract – a significant increase over the previous security provider’s budget.

Bafana Security Lapses Exposed

This alarming attack has thrust SAFA’s security arrangements into the spotlight. Another insider told City Press: “The staged hold-up is for the new company to justify why they should get the contract and why they should get a huge budget.”
