Desiree Ellis and Banyana Banyana get support from an unexpected source ahead of do-or-die World Cup clash.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has met up with Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis to wish her and the team well ahead of their World Cup showdown against Argentina on Friday.

IAN WRIGHT HAS STRONG TIES TO SOUTH AFRICA

The 59-year-old Wright is no stranger to South Africans who are staunch supporters of the English Premier League. Besides a distinguished career for the likes of Arsenal, Crystal Palace and West Ham, Wright also features on various shows for Premier League productions on DStv channel Supersport three.

Additionally, Wright has been a frequent visitor to South African shores, having been part of various Carling Black Label Cup drives over the years.

An avid Orlando Pirates fan, Wright now also appear to be a big supporter for the national women’s side, Banyana Banyana, who is currently competing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in Australia and New Zealand.

Banyana Banyana take on Argentina in a must-win in match on Friday, having narrowly lost to Sweden 2-1 in their opening game on Sunday. The defeat means that Desiree Ellis and her charges need to beat Argentina to stay in the tournament of Friday.

On Wednesday, Wright put out a Tweet containing a heartwarming video of him meeting up with and embracing Ellis.

He captioned the post: “All the best on Friday vs Argentina coach Desiree Ellis and Banyana Banyana.”
