Former Bafana Bafana handler Pitso ‘Jingles’ Mosimane has sent forward Percy Tau a special message ahead of the game against Morocco. The Abha Club’s new trainer shared the message on X.com hours before South Africa meet the North Africans on Tuesday evening. The Hugo Broos’ men face the Atlas Lions at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals. The knockout game will take place at Laurent Pokou Stadium in Ivory Coast. Kick-off is at 10pm South African time.

Tau gets Mosimane’s inspiration ahead of Morocco game

Ahead of the round-of-16 match, Mosimane sent Tau, who is also called Lion of Judah, a message. He urged his former player to use his massive experience to help Bafana Bafana see off the Atlas Lions. The 59-year-old tweeted via his handle @TheRealPitso: “Shika, Lion of Judah, you have the extensive experience and leadership of playing these big games…!”

Tau gets Jingles’ reminder about Bafana Bafana’s weapon

The ex-SuperSport United tactician then went on to share the secret that could help the 1996 Afcon champions defeat Morocco. Mosimane reminded Tau that combination-play is Bafana Bafana’s weapon. Jingles added: “…Confidence, Resilience, Hard work, Tactical Discipline and Teamwork. Let’s put our combination play [together]. Lots of teams struggle to stop us.”

Jingles worked with the Lion of Judah at Mamelodi Sundowns until the year 2018. The attacker left the DStv Premiership champions that year for a dream switch to Brighton & Hove Albion. He did not get much game-time with the Premier League mid-table outfit and hence moved to clubs such as Club Brugge and Anderlecht in Belgium. During that time, Mosimane also picked a job at Al Ahly in 2020.

Lion of Judah and Jingles’ player-coach relationship

Tau and Jingles eventually reunited at Al Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League in 2021. The Kagiso-born mentor, however, left Al Ahly for a new adventure in Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli Saudi in 2023.  A stint with Al Ahli Saudi paid dividends. He won the second-tier league title to earn Al Ahli Saudi promotion back to the Saudi Pro League last season. However, management opted to part ways with Mosimane, who went on to join Al Wahda FC in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E). A four-month stint with Al Wahda did not turn out as per script. The 59-year-old left the U.A.E outfit last November. He then got a new job at Abha Club last week.

Who is not available in Morocco’s camp?

Meanwhile, Morocco will be without forward Hakim Ziyech and winger Sofiane Boufal when they face Bafana Bafana. The duo is an injury doubt for the match. South Africa booked their place in the knockout stage after frustrating Tunisia to a goalless draw last Wednesday. The result saw the men for Broos finishing in second place in Group E with four points. Mali topped the log table with five points. Elsewhere, another round-of-16 contest will see Mali battling Burkina Faso also on Tuesday evening. Winners of the two matches hope to join Cape Verde, Guinea, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola in the quarterfinals.
