Mothiba has been named in the Strasbourg match day squad for their French Ligue 1 fixture against Clermont Foot.

This will mark an almost two-year period since Mothiba was last involved in a match day squad for Strasbourg, in a match where he took on Kaizer Chiefs player Keagan Dolly’s former side Montpellier in February 2020.

Mothiba underwent knee surgery in August last year to repair a damaged tendon in his knee, and has been out of action since. The target man suffered the injury during the previous off season, with his coach at the time Thierry Laurey confirming that they only expected to see him back in action in 2021.

Returns to the Strasbourg match day squad for the first time since

With the confirmation of Mothiba’s presence in Strasbourg’s match day squad today, it seems as though Laurey’s prediction has just made it! The Johannesburg-born player only returned to full training about a week ago, and seems to have made sufficient progress with regards to proving his match fitness, judging by how quickly management have decided to try and get him involved in first team action.

Mothiba will now hope to get on to the pitch and remind both Strasbourg and Bafana Bafana fans of what he is all about. The 25-year-old currently has 20 goal involvement in 59 appearances for the club, with 14 goals and six assists to his name since joining from LOSC Lille in August 2018.

A history maker for Bafana Bafana

Mothiba was part of the South African u23 side that participated in the 2016 Olympic Games. He then graduated to the Bafana Bafana side in 2018, making an electric start to life in the senior set up by becoming the first player to score for three consecutive matches for the national team from debut. He also formed part of former coach Stuart Baxter’s Afcon 2019 squad and has 4 goals to his name in his 14 caps for the side so far.
