Ex-Pirates star tells youngsters to stop showboating

Beating the defender and scorings goals is more important than trying to impress the fans with tricks according to a former Orlando Pirates star.
PSL coaches like Gavin Hunt and Dylan Kerr have spoken out against showboating. And now so has former Orlando Pirates playmaker Mark Mayambela.

Mayambela was speaking to FARPost and opened up on something he used to do but stopped.
Mayambela wants goals not tricks
“If you are a skilful player, drop the shoulder, eliminate defenders and score goals, then, I will applaud that,” said the ex-Pirates star. He was also on the books of Chippa United and Cape Town City during the latter stages of his career.
That’s quite a statement coming from a player who won two league titles with Pirates and two MTN titles.

“We also need to know that we develop these players for Bafana Bafana and top leagues in Europe,” he added.
“If we keep on encouraging showboating then it’s going to difficult to produce players who’ll help the national team.
“For me the knelling and putting the ball on the neck during the game I don’t think is appropriate.

“The kneeling on the ball is for township tournaments not the elite football,” said the midfielder who is now a youth coach.
The former Pirates player knows he was guilty of it in the past but believes things need to change.

“I remember also doing it [showboating] earlier in my career in the PSL, ” he said.
“I did it because I saw it on TV before becoming a professional footballer.
“Some players who I grew up looking up to were also showboating. I later realised that as much as it’s nice for the crowd, doesn’t it benefit the team?”
Orlando Pirates play Venda on Saturday, 11 March in the Nedbank Cup.
The match kicks off at 20:00.
