Tinkler: Mayo mustn’t focus on transfer speculation

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler says his striker Khanyisa Mayo must not focus on transfer speculation but on doing well.

In the wake of links with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler wants Khanyisa Mayo not to focus on transfer speculation.

Tinkler says speculation will always be there but Mayo must just focus on doing well for the club, City.

The left-footed Bafana Bafana striker is always surrounded by transfer rumours and Tinkler says that can derail the gifted striker, Mayo.

This comes as Mayo keeps finding the back of the net for City and the coach wants him to remain focussed on his game.

In addition, the former Bafana midfielder says Mayo’s dream move will eventually be realised because that is what he will be judged on.

“You can’t worry about that [transfer speculation], Mayo needs to worry about what he is doing now,” said Tinkler.

“Opportunities come off the back of scoring goals, winning competitions and winning cups, winning leagues.

“It’s not one performance that is going to get you the move, it is going to be many performances.

“Mayo still has a lot of work that he needs to do in his game, to really reach the level that I think of the higher standards.”

The son of former Chiefs player, Patrick, Mayo was once again on the score sheet as City beat Golden Arrows on Sunday afternoon.

That goal saw Mayo climb to seven goals on the PSL scoring charts this season, one above Moroka Swallows’ Tshegofatso Mabasa.

CITY COACH ON WHERE MAYO MUST IMPROVE

The seasoned DStv Premiership coach, Tinkler adds that Mayo must still improve on his finishing as he missed some of the chances.

The Citizens’ hitman scored for the second time against Abafana Bes’thende this term after netting in the Carling Knockout Cup Last 16.

“He missed a couple of good chances that he should have put it away,” Tinkler adds.

“The top strikers, the expectations are – they do that [put those chances away].”

Resulting from the victory, City climbed up to the top spot with 25 points after 13 matches.
