Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster has not been operating in his usual number nine position at Burnley of late.

Foster started the season as one of Burnley’s brighter sparks, before being given time off for mental health reasons.

The former Orlando Pirates striker may have caught a lot of Burnley supporters by surprise so far this season. After joining the Clarets in the January transfer window last year, Foster struggled to settle in and make an impact in the English Championship. There were even rumours circulating that he would be loaned out for the season.

Foster had a positive start to the season

Now in a tough season for Burnley in the topflight, he has been able to provide their fans with some fond memories. Those have mainly come from his finishing upfront. Foster has scored four goals in 19 games in the league for the club so far this season. Perhaps that is the reason why the club’s fans have been rather perplexed by manager Vincent Kompany changing his position.

In recent weeks, Foster has played at right wing, a position that has seen him have more defensive responsibilities. That, of course has given him less opportunity to go forward. Kompany has since explained why he has made that decision.

Kompany explains why he has changed his position

“Our players have always been flexible, always. It’s a perception from the outside, but if you look at his position in possession, he played exactly the same position as he’s always played. But it’s a perception thing. It’s 100 per cent part of something we’ve always done with our players, they’ve always had to be flexible to be able to be in different roles. Lyle (Foster) has already done it 15 or 20 times since he’s been with us, every player has done it, so I can’t control the perception. It’s an error to see it that way, but I don’t control that.” Said Kompany as per Burnley Express.

Burnley are currently in 19th place in the English Premier League, six points from safety. Foster will be hoping to help save his side’s topflight status.
