“I think I’ve scored goals that help my team reach our targets, and yes, I feel I’ve done everything that I can control to be in the Afcon squad.

“We can go all the way and win the Afcon. The rugby team [Springboks] showed us what we can achieve if we work hard and stick together,” Mayo said.

“There’s nothing, I can do about it. I can’t be worried about [whether] Mayo is not available, Mayo is suspended, that’s just the situation we find ourselves in. It’s about the other players stepping up,” Tinkler told iDiski Times.

“You’ve got Jo Paciencia, needs to now step, you’ve got Luke Daniels, who needs to step up, you can’t be reliant on one person.

“So, players need to take that responsibility.”

Bafana coach Hugo Broos is hoping none of his key players get injured weeks before his Afcon squad selection but one player that is not at risk is Mayo.
