Maguire refusing to leave Man United despite West Ham offer

West Ham United’s deal to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has fallen through after the defender reportedly refused to leave the club.

The 30-year-old was supposed to leave United after the club agreed on a $35-Million fee with West Ham.

Since Erik ten Hag took over as Man United coach, Maguire has fell out of the pecking order. Last year, ten Hag signed Lisandro Martinez, who then became first-choice centre-back alongside Raphael Varane and Lisandro. Victor Lindelof, who came on during United’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday, has been the second choice centre-back.

Maguire set to sit on the bench for another season

Ten Hag says Maguire should feel free to leave the club if he wants to play more games.

“We don’t have a squad with 11 players, and the last year proved definitely we need all the players. That means you need some high-level players who are maybe not starting but that can change so there is an internal competition, everyone has to fight for his place,” he was quoted on Sky Sports.

“Every player when they were good they will get their games but no one can play all the games and finally you find out what is the best team. In the squad now all the positions are double and every player has the perspective to fight for his place. You have to show with your contribution it’s the best team,”said ten Hag.

Ten Hag opting to play Varane and Martinez in defence

Maguire was set to leave Man United this summer after United agreed to West Ham’s $35-Million offer but it is believed that the defender stalled the move until the deal fell through.
